Southern Poverty Law Center and Americans for Immigrant Justice filed a federal class action lawsuit against the federal government Friday, alleging it’s using a Miramar Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office as a de facto civil detention center detaining noncitizens for days on end. The suit alleges the facility is crowded and unsanitary and that people aren’t given enough food or water.
Florida voters will have a chance to weigh in on property taxes with Amendment 3 in November but a new poll of 1,511 Florida homeowners shows they’d rather have the ability to lower their property insurance costs. Poll results show that 81% of those surveyed believe the state’s property insurance market hasn’t improved or has gotten worse despite sweeping new laws that limited people’s ability to sue insurance companies.
Florida Policy Institute has developed a user friendly online tool that allows residents to research the cost impact of Amendment 3 on county and municipal budgets by area code as well as its impact across a variety of special taxing districts across the state.
