He wants to investigate actions by execs responsible for deploying these chatbots, which have been implicated in the FSU mass shootings and the murders of two University of South Florida doctoral students. The proposed legislation has not been drafted yet, but Uthmeier imagines penalties could include heavy fines, payments to victims, court-ordered monitorship, and possibly suspension of business activity in the state.
The candidates disagree about whether Donalds committed to a joint appearance before the Tampa Tiger Bay Club (but a board member confirmed that the Donalds campaign had initially agreed to the meeting.) “Both men said their campaigns are in the beginning stages of planning debates that definitely will happen sometime in the next eight weeks,” Mitch Perry reports. “‘I don’t think there’s been communication among camps,’ Jolly said. ‘We’re trying to get the logistics worked out on our side,’ Donalds said Saturday.”
The organization thinks the amendment would prove a false economy, as local governments hike other costs for taxpayers to make up for lost revenue. The amendment, it fears, would reduce local governments’ abilities to prepare for stronger and wetter storms — and could undercut programs building sea walls, trimming trees, and other storm-hardening preparations, “dramatically, leaving communities unprotected from the effects felt during the annual hurricane seasons.”
