It looks like good news for Florida’s employers and their employees. The National Council on Compensation Insurance is recommending an average 7.4% reduction in workers compensation rates in Florida beginning Jan 1, 2027. It’s a recommendation only because Florida’s insurance commissioner is charged with setting the rates. The reduction is largely driven by a reduction in the frequency of “lost-time claims,” which are filed when employees miss work because of serious on the job work related injuries. Fewer claims filed means safer workplaces for employees, according to one of the leading voices representing Florida’s business interests.

Medicaid spending on applied behavior analysis is under review. As part of this year’s budget negotiations the Legislature agreed to establish a 10-member task force and charge it with reviewing the state’s healthcare delivery model to improve care but ensure long term viability of the program. To that end the panel was tasked with examining a number of things including “potential caps on the number of months an enrollee may receive ABA services” and potential “limits and use controls” related to the length of time ABA services can be authorized.

The start of an academic school year usually is met with a series of new things such as school supplies and clothes. But there are a few new laws on the books for the start of this academic school year thanks to the Florida Legislature. Students with autism and individualized education plans may be affected.
